Embedded between the Westerschelde and the Antwerp industry lies the Hertogin Hedwigepolder.
In the summer she is green and lush,
in the winter she is empty and black, with geometric forms and a pattern of lines left.
The poplars stand side by side,
waving to each other, between them a road.
Geese taking flight disturb the murmur of the wind.
Horses’ hooves sound in the distance.
I absorb the scenery while walking over the dike.
I search for the connection between the inhabitants and this landscape, which will return to its original state when man leaves it behind.
Due to the deepening of the Westerschelde,
the polder will be given back to the sea.
I will absorb the scenery once more. That which disappears will always trigger the need to cherish it in me.
